BC
Improvisation Tournament
The BC Improvisation Tournament plays
Tuesday to Saturday as part of the Festival with an Olympic-style competitive
format where teams from all over BC go head to head to find the province's
improvisation champions and crown them with the bragging rights for the
entire year (not to mention the monetary grand prize!). Tournament Finals
and award ceremony take place on Saturday February 23rd.
The BC Improvisation Tournament is one of the first tournaments of its kind in the area to invite professional and amateur improvisers alike to perform and compete together in a brand new Olympic style format. Tournament organizers realized what the difficulties were for different forms of improvisation to compete on equal terms in a tournament form. So…
With this new format all the teams will
be challenged to different disciplines of improvisation insuring an equal
playing field. The format consists of four events: the "Open", "Game",
"Solo" and "Genre."
RYAN MILLAR
BC IMPROV TOURNAMENT COORDINATOR
When
Vancouver performer Ryan Millar heard about the BC Improvisation Tournament
at the first !nstant Improv festival, he never expected to be running it
the following year, but sometimes fate kicks in. While his team (“Team
# 4”) that year didn’t make the finals, what they did manage to do was
capture the interest of Festival organizer Alistair Cook. It wasn’t
long before he and his teammates Alan Morisson, Josh Kennedy were asked
to join the !nstant Theatre Ensemble. “What impressed me was their
risk taking” says Cook, “so we gave them the award for “most experimental
team”, which considering the Company’s mandate to create new, challenging
forms if improvised theatre, was more important than any trophy.
Millar has since performed in five !nstant shows and has been a host, referee and adjudicator for the Canadian Improv games. He returns again this year to his duties as coordinator for the third annual tournament with a whole lotta love.
When asked what he would like to see on the improv scene in years to come, he said a “greater prominence of different styles of improv” would have the most “positive and enriching affect on the city.”
Oh yeah, and he just got back from Hawaii!
Teams are comprised of a mix of actors,
improvisers, and swell people from all walks of life. Pretty much
the only pre-requisite is that they promise to have a good time.
The tournament is about peolple working together and having fun, so please,
no sabotage and may the best team win!
