Rock Paper Scissors in "Blankety Blank, the unknown Musical"
"HUM A FEW BARS AND I'LL FAKE IT"
Rock-Paper-Scissors Comedy Creations Inc. is pleased to be part of the 2nd annual Instant Improvisation Festival. The festival runs from February 19th to March 3rd and will feature and eclectic mix of comedy and musical performers.
Determine to fulfil our mandate as always being unique and inspired, Rock-Paper-Scissors will be both comedy AND musical as they present Blankety Blank - The Unknown Musical, February 28th at 8pm.
Last October Rock-Paper-Scissors presented the first version of Blankety Blank under the title The Grinners! That show was about a troupe of "Up With People" types who after a spectacular opening (including timpani drums, giant banners falling from the ceiling, magic exploding doors and 100 beach balls) performed an completely improvised musical. Well, the drums and banners are gone. The balls (courtesy of Toys 'R Us) have all been donated to The Boys & Girls Club of Vancouver. All we have left is the music (literally) and the magic (figuratively).
Blankety Blank - The Unknown Musical is unlike any theatrical show you are like to see. There is no script, at all, there isn't even a basis of a story. There are no set tunes (except for an opening number) and the actors have no idea who will be playing what characters. The three-person band and the five cast members are basing the whole show on impulse and intuition.
Although still witty and funny, this format of improvisation is based more on emotion and story telling. In workshops lead by Mr. Alan Marriott from London, England last summer Rock-Paper-Scissors discovered this infinitely more scary yet ultimately more thrilling style of theatre. The audience experiences the creation of the musical at the same moment as the actors. Talk about spontaneous comedy, the improvisers just open their mouths and hope something that blends with the musicians comes out.
Blankety Blank - The Unknown Musical has one performance only as part of the Instant Improvisation Festival, Wednesday February 28th at 8pm, Vancouver Little Theatre 3102 Main St (alley entrance). Tickets are only $8, call 727-3286 for details and/or passes.
