Friday February 22nd, 10:30pm
Talking Pictures

Formed in 1993 by guitarist/composer Ron Samworth, Vancouver's Talking Pictures is a quartet that synthesizes diverse musical experiences in a communion of form and freedom. With Bill Clark on trumpet, Dylan van der Schyff on drums, and Peggy Lee on cello, the group draws on a distinctive and wide ranging sonic palette and reveals an empathy that Canadian writer Mark Miller describes as "a closely attenuated style of group playing, deliberate yet wholly responsive, with a wonderful sense of space."

The jazz continuum from Armstrong to Zorn, the bold, abstract textures of new music and Jimi Hendrix, and the richly evocative spirit of Kurt Weill and Nino Rota all meet in a compelling sound world of near cinematic richness.

A frequent performer in their home town, Talking Pictures has been featured in the du Maurier International Jazz Festival in Vancouver since 1993. They have toured across Canada and in Europe where they have played at prestigious festivals and venues such as the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, the BIMhuis and De IJsbreker Music Centres in Amsterdam, Instants Chavirés in Paris and the Loft in Köln.  Their debut CD, Ciao Bella, and their second, The Mirror with a Memory are on Montreal's Red Toucan label. Talking Pictures also has a decidedly theatrical bent, having written and performed RubyCab, an original cabaret with the Ruby Slippers Theatre Company, as well as performed the music and text of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht with guest vocalists. They have also arranged and performed in an acclaimed production of Brecht's Three Penny Opera.

Talking Pictures will be performing as part of the Third Annual !nstant Improvisation Festival at Yaletown's Roundhouse Theatre (181 Roundhouse Mews / Davie at Pacific) Friday February 22nd at 10:30pm. For more information, please call 604-874-7522.

Saturday February 23rd, 10:30pm
Green Room recreational series presents:
Flight Case
A special evening of improvised instumental groove

Flight Case is an ongoing series of improvisational events that aims to create live dance music for the moment.  Masterminded by the leadership of BC's heaviest touring funk band Green Room, Flight Case brings Vancouver's most in demand players together in small combos and intimate settings to tear the roof off grooves. While the players drip with chops form the classsic funk school, Flight Case prefers the sounds of contemporary dance music from hip hop to house. drum n bass to dub.  Everything is improvised live, but the pockets are tight. The sessions are focussed squarely on the dancefloor. Performers include: Ian Beaty- acoustic and electric basses, sampler, Colin Brumelle- guitar, wah wah pedal, Scott Sanft- keyboards, effects, Avi Shack- turntables.

Flight Case: improvisations for the dance floor.

Flight Case is a subsidiary to Green Room's regular operatoins. Stripping away the stage antics and entertainment values that have made Green Room the best loved touring act on the westcoast, the emphasis here is on delivering strait-up instrumental grooves. The object is to develop a successful club night which will serve as a playing field to expand, develop, and update the Green Room family library of dance weapons and grooves .

Flight Case will be performing as part of the Third Annual !nstant Improvisation Festival at Yaletown’s Roundhouse Theatre (181 Roundhouse Mews / Davie at Pacific) Saturday February 23rd at 10:30pm. For more information, please call 604-874-7522 or visit www.instanttheatre.com.

CHECK THIS OUT: Green Room will be performing February 15th at Wise Hall (1882 Adanac -behind the VECC @ Venables and Victoria) SHOW: 9PM TICKETS: $10 WISE club members/ $14 non-members.
